Comparative materials study

One question that is often asked is how does the carbon footprint of cartons (326kg CO2 per tonne of cartons) compare against fossil-based packaging. Pro Carton has recently undertaken a study that not only compares the published carbon footprint data per tonne of material but also looks at the carbon footprint on a per unit basis. Four products have been compared, one in a predominantly plastic pack and one in cartonboard across three food products and one non-food item. The results are very favourable for cartons, even when just comparing the respective fossil greenhouse gas emissions. The analysis was conducted by RISE, the Swedish research institute, and was peer reviewed by Intertek, a leading Total Quality Assurance provider.
