Join the live-stream event on 3 Feb at 9:30-11:00 CET – “Sustainable Products Initiative – What role for fibre-based packaging?”
In 2022, the Commission will present its Sustainable Products Initiative including principles and parameters to define product sustainability. Examples are believed to be for instance durability, reusability, upgradability, reparability and recycled content. A legislative proposal on substantiating green claims is also expected, as well as a revised Packaging & Packaging Waste Directive.
In relation to fibre-based packaging, the upcoming Commission proposals raise several important questions, such as:
- How should overarching sustainability principles and parameters be implemented to allow for product specific approaches?
- Why is it important for the green transition that renewability/renewable content is included as a sustainability principle?
- How could it be assured that fibre-based single-use products are regarded as important contributors to a more circular economy?
- How much additional work is needed on the PEF method before it can be applied to substantiate green claims?
