2024 winners demonstrate innovation and creativity with unique cartonboard packaging designs

The winners of the Pro Carton Young Designers Award 2024 – sponsored by Billerud, Westrock, UMKA, Van Genechten Packaging, MM, and Metsä  – were announced at a glamourous ceremony in Berlin, Germany (19 September).

Recognising the best young design talent in Europe, the winners were announced by Horst Bittermann, Pro Carton’s Director General, in front of an audience of packaging industry leaders. This ceremony featured awards in four categories:

  • Creative Cartonboard Packaging (Food & Drink)
  • Creative Cartonboard Packaging (All Other)
  • Sustainability
  • Public Vote Award

Almost 900 entries were received from many institutions across Europe. These were reviewed in detail by a judging panel that represented the entire packaging value chain. Satkar Gidda, former Sales and Marketing Director of SiebertHead, headed the jury, supported by Sanjeev Das, Unilever’s Global Packaging Director in the Foods and Ice Cream business; Lotte Krekels, Head of Packaging at Carrefour, and Heidi Vanspauwen, Marketing & Communications Director at Van Genechten Packaging.

Turkey based student Murat Yasir Dilek, the designer of Bridge, clinches the top spot in the Creative Cartonboard Packaging: Food & Drink category.

Bridge is a unique packaging design created for long, baguetteshaped products. Its telescopic structure, made from interlocking cartonboard pieces, allows for easy placement and removal of the product, ensuring a secure and efficient packaging solution. Designed with consumer convenience in mind, Bridge features a re-sealable closure that helps maintain freshness and hygiene of the food product inside while keeping fingers clean during consumption. The easy-open design provides effortless access, while the stackable nature of the packaging optimised storage space for the retailer.

Taking the top prize in the Creative Cartonboard Packaging (All Other) category for their SeedKit design was trio Adrian Breindl, Luisa Rausch and Luka Vogt from the FH Münster – MSD Münster School of Design in Germany.

SeedKit is a gardening tool designed to streamline the seeding process. Featuring a removable tip, it allows for precise seed dispensing, preventing over-sowing. The tip can also be used as a small pair of tweezers to pick up any misplaced seeds, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. Its integrated depth and spacing rulers make it easy to create the perfect planting conditions, while the tool’s ergonomic design provides a comfortable grip, similar to a pen, making gardening effortless. SeedKit is compact and portable, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor gardening projects.

Powder Shower

Austrian student, Inti-Filippa Crespín from Die Graphische in Vienna took home the Sustainability Award for the design Dashamp – The Dry Shampoo.

Dashamp is a revolutionary dry shampoo package that offers a sustainable alternative to traditional aluminum aerosol cans. This innovative design not only protects the environment, but also provides a convenient and effective way to freshen up hair quickly. Inspired by the shape of a showerhead, Dashamp symbolises a freshly washed hair experience. The cartonboard has holes at the top for dispensing the dry shampoo powder, while a sliding mechanism ensures that the powder remains securely contained until you’re ready to use it, preventing spills and mess.

A Chocolate Treat

We asked general public to choose their favourite entry in the Public Vote. The winner of this prestigious award was Middle East Technical University student trio, Derya Gök, Gizem Eryılmaz and Ayça Çaylı
