Industry Spotlight: Michelle Brosch, Machine Operator and Trainer at Schwarzach Packaging

Background and Introduction

Can you provide a brief introduction to yourself and your current role in the carton and cartonboard industry?

My name is Michelle Brosch, I am 22 years old, and I work at Schwarzach Packaging as a machine operator as well as a trainer for apprentices in packaging technology. In 2018, I began my own apprenticeship as a packaging technician at Schwarzach Packaging, which I successfully completed in 2022.

How did you first become interested in this field, and what led you to your current career path?

I first became aware of this career through various apprenticeship platforms. Initially, I wanted to become a hairdresser, but after a trial day at Schwarzach Packaging, I quickly realized that the technical field was not only something I was good at but also something I truly enjoyed. At that time, the proportion of women in this industry was still relatively low—so it makes me even happier to see that more and more women are now choosing this career path.

Career Journey

Can you describe the key milestones and experiences that have shaped your career in this industry?

A major milestone for me was successfully completing my apprenticeship. A significant challenge—and at the same time a special achievement—was taking on the role of a trainer. This responsibility means a lot to me, and Schwarzach Packaging has supported me with numerous training opportunities.

Were there any particular challenges or turning points that stand out in your professional journey?

Stepping into the role of a trainer was a big challenge, as it required not only technical expertise but also strong communication and mentoring skills. However, it has been incredibly rewarding to guide young apprentices through their training and help them succeed.

Daily Work and Responsibilities

What does a typical day or week in your current role look like?

On Mondays and Tuesdays, I oversee the laser die-cutting machine while also being responsible for training apprentices in packaging technology. On the remaining days, I order materials, prepare assignments for the apprentices, and, if necessary, help them set up the machines.

Are there any specific projects or initiatives you’ve been involved in recently that you find particularly exciting or innovative?

My primary project is preparing my apprentices for their final apprenticeship examination. Their success is especially important to me, and I dedicate a lot of time and effort to ensuring they are well-prepared.

Industry Impact

How do you believe your work contributes to the sustainable and environmentally friendly aspects of cartonboard packaging?

A strong education and role models play a crucial role in ensuring that many young people remain in the company or the industry after completing their apprenticeships. This is an important contribution to sustainable development and helps address the shortage of skilled workers.

I am particularly pleased to see that women working on large machines is becoming the norm. The increasing diversity in technical professions brings fresh perspectives and strengthens our team.

Additionally, I place great importance on the responsible handling of products and raw materials. A strong focus on quality not only enhances our packaging solutions but also helps optimise resource efficiency and reduce waste.

What trends or developments in the industry are you most excited about, and how do they influence your work?

The growing number of women in technical professions is a development I find particularly exciting. It reflects a positive shift in the industry and encourages more young women to consider a career in packaging technology.

Advice and Inspiration

What advice do you have for individuals considering a career in the carton and cartonboard industry?

My advice for anyone interested in this profession: Just apply or attend a trial day to experience packaging technology firsthand.

Are there any personal or professional accomplishments that you are especially proud of and would like to share?

I am particularly proud of my role as a trainer and the numerous training and development opportunities Schwarzach Packaging has provided me. My greatest achievement is helping my apprentices successfully pass their final exams.

What is the one reason why you are proud to work in the carton and cartonboard industry?

Every time I see a package in a supermarket that my team and I have produced, I feel a sense of pride. Knowing that my work contributes to high-quality, sustainable packaging solutions makes this career incredibly fulfilling.

Michelle’s story is a testament to the opportunities available in the packaging industry, particularly for those willing to learn, innovate, and support the next generation of skilled professionals.
