In a first of its kind project the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) has called upon its member companies to voluntarily exhibit innovative, emissions-reducing projects that centre on increasing energy efficiency and promoting the use of renewable energy sources.
WEIG-Karton will be presenting themselves in a new light at the 17th Global Gypsum Conference & Exhibition in Kraków in Poland in October. The focus will be on three aspects: the new positioning of “Driven by care”, the UNIPLAC® plasterboard liner for maximum production stability and worldwide reliability of supply at the same high-level quality standards. The latter will be visualized by the new “global hands” key visual.
One of the world’s most widely used forms of packaging – the blister pack – can now be made totally in paperboard. Two major benefits are reduced environmental impact and less consumer rage and self-injury.
The international packaging manufacturer Multi Packaging Solutions (MPS), part of WestRock, has installed the world’s first Speedmaster XL 106 with 18 units at its Scottish site in East Kilbride. MPS is responding to the high level of customer demand on the part of designers and brand owners for a wide variety of finishing options and premium quality.
The Heilbronn-based die-cutting manufacturer Marbach operates worldwide. One of its 16 plants is located in Kielce, Poland. This subsidiary was housed in a rented building during the last years. The move into a newly constructed building took place in June 2016. This building has recently won an architecture award.
Metsä Board’s uncoated white kraftliner, MetsäBoard Natural WKL Bright, provided the ideal solution for Kyrö Distillery’s gift packaging for its premium Napue Gin brand.
What are your expectations for your industries over the next 12 months?
RR – All indicators for private consumption are positive in Europe so the demand for FMCG packaging will grow. This will help to fill some of the spare production capacities. Changing shopping behaviour to a diversified omni-channel shopping environment and digitalization will both create new opportunities. I feel that industry consolidation will help create stronger, more cost efficient and innovative businesses which can fulfil our customers’ requirements and, importantly, be profitable.
AB – Volume should be good over the next year as the economy is picking up. Margins, however, remain under pressure since raw material prices are up and hard to recover. I don’t expect to see much further consolidation or largescale rationalisation in the short term as many companies have been through a period of change which is often followed by a period of integration and stability.
More than 300 million tonnes of plastic is manufactured every year¹ of which millions of tonnes of plastic waste leaks into the seas. We’ve all seen images from around the world of beaches covered with discarded plastic packaging. McKinsey’s Ocean Report² states that the next 10 years will be critical to tackle the global problem of plastic leakage into the seas, but plastic goods production is still increasing and displacing more sustainable materials, such as renewable wood fibre based products including cartons.
