Career Journey

Can you describe the key milestones and experiences that have shaped your career in this industry?

I’ve been with GPI for over six and a half years, and it has been an amazing journey. When I first arrived in Sweden from Macedonia, I had been living here for only a few months and could barely speak Swedish. During my first interview, I was nervous, but my manager made me feel very welcome and created a trusting environment. He’s been incredibly supportive since then, and he has given me opportunities to grow in ways I didn’t expect.

I started out with sorting and handing packaging, but over the years, I’ve had the chance to work on several machines, including two gluing machines and a sheeting machine. I now work as an extrusion operator. My curiosity and interest in technical processes helped me learn the extrusion machine quicker than expected. I’ve also had the chance to suggest improvements to the machines. One of my ideas was recognized by our Technical and Project Managers, and it contributed to the development of the sheeting machine, which felt great.

Were there any particular challenges or turning points that stand out in your professional journey?

Yes, my first day at GPI was quite challenging. I was nervous, starting a new job, learning a new language, and meeting new people. But my manager gave me confidence right from the start, and his trust in me pushed me to do my best. The support I received helped me develop faster, and my interest in learning different machines gave me flexibility within the company. It allowed me to take on varied tasks and support my colleagues when needed, which is something I really enjoy.

Daily work and responsibilities

What does a typical day or week in your current role look like?

As an extrusion operator, I’m responsible for managing the extrusion machine and ensuring that it runs smoothly. My favourite part of the job is when we do test runs of new materials or products. I love being involved in this process, as it gives me a chance to collaborate with colleagues and use my knowledge to find the best machine settings for optimal results.

In addition to my operator duties, I’m also part of our local Rescue & Assistance Group (RAG), which focuses on safety and emergency preparedness. We receive extra training in first aid and safety, and I’m proud to be part of this group. Safety is a top priority at GPI. We have daily safety meetings with our manager, which provide an excellent platform to highlight safety concerns and make sure any risks are addressed.
Industry impact

How do you believe your work contributes to the sustainable and environmentally friendly aspects of cartonboard packaging?

The work we do in creating sustainable packaging materials directly impacts the company’s goal of reducing plastic use and offering environmentally friendly solutions. It’s rewarding to know that my efforts contribute to creating sustainable products that have a positive impact on the environment.
