Iwona Zuk-Larsen Process Manager, Customer Service at Metsä, Finland

Please provide a brief introduction to yourself and your current role within the carton and cartonboard industry.

I joined Metsä Group in 2012 and transitioned to Metsä Board in 2022. My career began in finance as a Financial Analyst in the manufacturing sector, and I later took on my first leadership role at a Scandinavian cooperative that produces dairy products. Over the past decade at Metsä, I’ve been part of establishing a shared service organisation in Gdansk, where I focused on process management, system development, and automation projects. Currently, I lead the EMEA Customer Service Teams responsible for multinational accounts, focusing on delivering exceptional service as a premium supplier. Connecting directly with customers to understand and fulfil their needs within our supply chain is what makes this role so engaging for me.

How did you first become interested in this field, and what led you to your current career path?

After working in finance for a few years, I found that I enjoyed the collaborative aspects of leadership and project management. Working at Metsä allowed me to explore these areas while growing into more customer-centric roles. When the opportunity arose to join Metsä Board’s Supply Chain Center in Gdansk, I saw it as a new and exciting journey where I could continue developing within the group.

Can you describe the key milestones and experiences that have shaped your career in this industry?

Two main transitions stand out: the centralisation of accounting, finance, and supply chain responsibilities and being part of a broader program to unify key processes within Metsä Group. Joining Metsä Board and being part of creating a single Supply Chain Centre in Gdansk has been a significant milestone, allowing me to build a team focused on optimising customer service across the region.

Were there any challenges or turning points that stand out in your professional journey?

A major turning point was moving to Finland, where I worked at Metsä Headquarters for a few years. This experience gave me the chance to collaborate with a broader team across the company, manage procurement processes, and visit mills to see our products come to life. Another significant shift was transitioning from development-focused roles to customer service within the supply chain—connecting with new stakeholders, understanding our customers, and building these relationships has been a truly rewarding challenge.

What does a typical day or week in your current role look like?

I start each week by setting priorities and aligning my tasks with our team’s goals. My time is divided between strategic planning, organising meetings with my manager, colleagues, and direct reports, and ensuring our services meet the highest standards. I also monitor our key performance indicators, such as responsiveness, to keep everything on track. Recently, my focus has been on enhancing our EMEA Customer Service hub to improve communication and build stronger customer connections. It’s a dynamic role where each day brings new learning and growth opportunities.

Are there any specific projects or initiatives you’ve been involved in recently that you find particularly exciting or innovative?

One of the most exciting projects has been the consolidation of EMEA Customer Services under a central hub, which has allowed us to streamline processes, leverage synergies, and elevate our services. Establishing this unified structure has enabled us to strengthen relationships with Metsä Board customers and develop tools to support our expanded operations.

How do you believe your work contributes to the sustainable and environmentally friendly aspects of cartonboard packaging?

My role is all about understanding and responding to customer needs, including sustainability. During customer interactions and meetings, we align on shared values like Metsä’s commitment to becoming fossil-free by 2030. I also work to educate new team members about our sustainability goals and the impact of our 360° services, which help us, and our customers develop innovative, eco-friendly packaging solutions.

What trends or developments in the industry are you most excited about, and how do they influence your work?

I’m particularly enthusiastic about replacing plastic in packaging, especially for perishable products like fruits and vegetables. Both as a consumer and a professional, I see the impact of replacing plastic wrapping with cartonboard solutions, which is a significant trend influencing my work. These advancements are in line with customer demand, bringing more orders and opportunities for Metsä Board to lead in sustainable packaging innovation.

What advice do you have for individuals considering a career in the carton and cartonboard industry?

Metsä has provided me with countless opportunities to develop within different departments and roles, allowing me to experience various aspects of the industry. For anyone considering this field, I’d advise embracing the chance to learn and adapt—this is an industry that offers a career path filled with purpose, where we can protect the environment and build meaningful skills. The cartonboard industry is built on strong values, which is something I’ve come to admire deeply.

Are there any personal or professional accomplishments that you are especially proud of and would like to share?

My husband works in the sustainable wood-building sector, so discussions about sustainability are a regular part of our lives. I’m proud that we’re instilling these values in our children, who will hopefully grow up with the same commitment to environmental care and sustainability.

What is the one reason why you are proud to work in the carton and cartonboard industry?

I am proud to work at Metsä Board, where we prioritise sustainable growth by putting people and nature at the centre of what we do.
