Interview with the new Chairman of ECMA

Andreas Blaschke is the new president of ECMA (European Carton Makers Association). Despite the difficult economic environment, he sees significant opportunities for cartonboard and cartons—due to the facts that they are sustainable and have significant innovative potential. Pro Carton at the ECMA-Congress 2011

Once again Pro Carton had a significant presence at the ECMA Congress held this year in Barcelona between 14th and 17th September. This congress which brings together a large number of carton makers, cartonboard manufacturers and suppliers to the industry is one of the main events in the carton calendar and Pro Carton took the opportunity to update all those present with its activities, publications and details of upcoming events.

A single standard for all

The international standards organisation (ISO) is presently working on the new standard ISO 14067 for the CO2 footprint of products in order to quantify and publish the greenhouse gas emissions of products and services as a worldwide standard. In Vienna, Pro Carton President Roland Rex and Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wimmer, Technical University, Vienna, and the co-convenor of the ISO 14067 working party, Dr. Klaus Radunsky, met to discuss developments on the upcoming CO2 footprint of products. Pro Carton is convinced that the new standard will help to position cartonboard even more as a sustainable material for packaging. The CO2 footprint of products determines the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions which can be attributed to a product during its entire lifecycle. A final document is expected by the middle of 2012.

International Pro Carton Congress: Packaging in a Digital World

Pro Carton/ECMA Award 2011: interest keeps growing

In 2011, companies from 15 European countries participated in the Pro Carton/ECMA Awards. At 114 entries, the number of entered packaging concepts was the second highest ever. The finalists will be announced during the ECMA Congress in Barcelona from 14. – 17. September 2011, and together with the finalists, the winners will be honoured at the Pro Carton Congress in Düsseldorf in the spring of 2012.

Packaging as a marketing instrument

Legal requirements, globalisation, branding, information overload: in their latest book “Packaging Marketing“ Christina Vaih-Baur and Sonja Kastner clearly demonstrate that the role of packaging is increasing in importance for brand communication. For many manufacturers the fifth “P“ , equals packaging, is of the same significance as the four classic ”P’s“ : Product, Promotion, Price and Place. The advantages of cartonboard: feels good and is authentic.

What do consumers want

The manufacturers of branded goods and the retail trade have a common goal: they need to address the needs of individual consumer groups more efficiently, especially the more demanding clientele, to sell more quality products.
The solution: ”Collaborative Shopper Marketing“. A current study conducted by Henkel in which individual shopper typologies were examined in ten different European countries, with the conclusion: essential basis for packaging design.

Cartons – best of the show

In the past two years, cartons have climbed to the summit of the worldwide packaging design competition Pentawards and won the Diamond Pentawards in both years: in 2009 the highly attractive “Kleenex Slice of Summer” from the USA, and in 2010 the luxurious hairstyling series “Hoyu 3210” from Japan. The jury was particularly impressed by the sparing use of information to make the design even more convincing. This confirms Pro Carton’s postulate that cartonboard is the ideal basis for bringing the message to the consumers!
